The letter below is going home with students and will include a reading log and money reading list. Feel free to go to the noted website to download any further information. We are reading the first money book in library classes so students can already color in one money box! The title of the book is Betty Bunny Wants Everything!
Porters Point School is participating in a statewide program called Reading is an Investment. The goal of the program is to teach elementary-aged children personal finance concepts. We are one of 135 Vermont elementary schools who will use the program this school year. The program is managed by the Vermont State Treasurer’s Office. Participating schools are sent three new books each year that highlight a specific personal finance theme. Through an instructional activity in the school library and personal reading at home, students are introduced to basic financial concepts. The 2015-2016 personal finance theme is “Money Business!” As a family, you have the opportunity to help your child complete a reading log that will then be entered into a drawing for a $250 college savings plan account. Last year, more than 5,600 students statewide completed logs and entered the drawing. Twenty prizes will be awarded this year. In order to complete a reading log, a student must read three books from a recommended money reading list and color an “open” box for every 20 minutes of reading. We will share the first money book in library class and color in that box. Money books can be checked out at the PPS library and the Burnham Public Library. You can find a reading log and recommended money reading list attached to this letter. You also may print a reading log and reading list by going to www.MoneyEd.Vermont.gov. The deadline to complete a reading log and mail it into the State Treasurer’s Office is March 15, 2016. If you wish to send your completed and signed reading log to the PPS Library instead of mailing it in yourself, you may give it to me at school. I will mail any entries I receive on Friday March 4, 2016. I hope this combination of personal reading supported by an instructional exercise will help our students expand their knowledge of personal finance.
